How DVD Networks Helped Brightview Modernize Telecom Communications

Between July of 2021 and January of 2023, DVD Networks completed 22 phone system upgrades for new and existing communities and 3 phone system deployments for new communities at Brightview Senior Living. The Challenges

Brightview’s phone systems were all independent on-premise systems with no inter-communication between communities. If someone at one Brightview community needed to call another Brightview community, that person would need to look up the phone number for that site and call the front desk to reach whoever was needed.

Brightview Corporate’s goal going forward was to start standardizing the many different systems across communities, including phone systems, Wi-Fi, and employee wired networks.

Brightview had a significant number of Toshiba CIX legacy digital PBX systems still in use at nearly every one of their communities. These systems were several years beyond end-of-life and were unsupported by the manufacturer.

The Solution

Brightview tasked DVD Networks with replacement, training, and systems integration at each community. Every install was a unique challenge, as each site had been built at a different time and had a unique layout. The DVD team had to treat each upgrade as if it was an independent client environment.

To fulfill Brightview’s requirements and needs for future growth, DVD employed and constructed a cloud-hosted Mitel Unified Communications (UC) solution in a private data center environment. Mitel is a world-renowned brand in the telecommunications industry known for durable, innovative, and reliable products. All system engineering, design, and programming was implemented by DVD’s internal Voice Team, which is made up of Mitel-certified technicians and engineers.

Each of the existing Brightview communities had a unique infrastructure that required a tailored approach to each deployment. DVD employed the use of Mitel’s Phybridge/Streamline data over CAT3 switching devices, allowing Brightview to deploy IP-based phones without the need for costly re-cabling from CAT3 wiring to CAT6 wiring. This approach also significantly reduced installation time for the on-site crews and created standardization across all communities.

The Mitel UC solution allowed each new community added to the system to utilize shared resources:

Reducing installation cost for Brightview

Creating ease of maintenance and support for DVD

With Mitel UC, staff and communities can seamlessly share text, video calls, and audio calls within their community but also with other communities on the system. The system currently supports approximately 1,600 endpoints, including mobile phones and desk phones.

The Results

After the installs, Brightview experienced a significant increase in employee communication and benefited from features that weren’t previously available. Now, Sales Directors can make and receive work-related calls even when they are outside the community, allowing them to be mobile but still reachable.

Maintenance Directors can receive calls on their desk phone and transfer those calls in real time to their mobile device and traverse the building when needed. Rotating Wellness Nurses can make and receive calls anywhere in the community so they can always be reached in an emergency.

Brightview communities have seen a significant increase in features, capabilities, and capacity for future growth. Communities have given accolades to DVD for the team’s ability to:
